Some things you just can't make up.

Back in January, we reported
that Heath Shuler would be playing in RFK for the Congressional
baseball game, a completely appalling situation that was only slightly
rectified by the fact that we got a funny quote in Roll Call. As the
game got closer, there were numerous reports about how the Democrats had high hopes for Shuler:

But
clearly the party's great hope is former Redskin Heath Shuler, newly
elected from North Carolina's 11th District. "He's hit about three or
four out of the ballpark in practice. It's hard to believe he was just
a quarterback, he looks like a linebacker. The problem is he can't run"
-- owing to a career-ending foot injury. "He's either going to hit a
home run or a single, then we have to get him a pinch runner," said
Doyle.

OK -- high hopes for Shuler before he plays. Check.

The game was on Monday night, and in a shocking development, Shuler somehow managed to not rise to the occasion:

Expectations
were great for Rep. Heath Shuler, of North Carolina, who played
quarterback in the NFL. But a foot injury relegated him to be a
designated hitter, and he struck out every time.

Injury. Check.

Crapping in the bed at RFK. Check.

Is it 1995 again?

We kinda figured that as of November 8, our work was done. But Shuler keeps rearing his draft-bust head.

First, some good news when we found out that his office is on the fifth floor of the four-floor Cannon building (Ex-Redskin Shuler again an outsider in Washington -- The Washington Times).

Things went down hill as we read an interview in SI where he talks about the "positive response" he has gotten from the people of DC. Come on, people! You should chant "We Want Gus" as he walks down the street! A little help here!

Then, to our Horror, we read this in Roll Call:

Shuler Will Return to RFK in ’07

He may not have made any Pro Bowls or been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but Democrats are hoping freshman Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) still shares some athletic similarities with former Rep. Steve Largent (R-Okla.).

We’ll find out this summer when Shuler returns to his old stomping grounds at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium for the 46th Annual Roll Call Congressional Baseball Game.

[Shuler] is looking forward to returning to RFK, the Redskins’ former home.

“I guess the good thing is it can’t any worse from when I played there last,” he said. “I’m looking forward to redeeming myself.”

When we started this site, it was all about keeping Shuler away from the Redskins. Apparently, we underestimated the ability of a lone website concentrating on a single irrelevant issue to influence the outcome of a Congressional campaign. Not only did Shuler win, but the Redskins went 5-11 (coincidence? We think not). And now, this final slap in the face.

The good news is that Roll Call believes in telling both sides of story:

[O]thers predict only negatives for Shuler and his team.

Jason Woodmansee, the blogger behind StopShuler.com during the campaign, recalled Shuler being “booed mercilessly” during his last game at RFK Stadium and warned the Democrats against using the one-time quarterback.

“Using history as a guide, he will hold out until he gets what he wants — maybe better committee assignments and a bill passed that strips Charlie Ward of the 1993 Heisman Trophy,” Woodmansee joked. “When he finally plays, his first pitch will be intercepted and returned for a touchdown, he will injure himself in his second game and be replaced by an unheralded Congressman out of Oklahoma who will perform much better. And then he’ll blame the whole thing on [Speaker] Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) being a ‘rookie coach.’”

Oh, snap!

We're thinking that we may need to have a Stop Shuler field trip to the baseball game, and taunt and heckle Shuler, just like the old days. Who's with us?

Well, as you may have heard, Heath Shuler was elected to Congress today.

Back in January, when we found out Heath Shuler was running for Congress, we thought, "wouldn't it be funny to oppose his bid, purely on football reasons?" We think the conclusion, after all of this, is yes. Yes it was.

We did this for the cause of comedy. No higher ideals,no politics, nothing very noble. Technically, we are not residents of DC (we prefer sunny San Diego these days). Technically, we are Democrats. Even more technically, we are more liberal than Heath Shuler. And while we are dealing in technicalities, our family wants us back.

We learned lots of things along the way.

We realized that we're glad that we don't live in North Carolina's 11th Congressional district. Not just because we lack "mountain values," but because of who they had to choose from in this election. As much as we made fun of Heath Shuler for his football career, as a politician he really seemed like an empty suit. That being said, his opponent, Charles Taylor, was a rich old crook who had problems being even remotely appealing. It is amazing what happens when you start to look at the details of a specific Congressional election -- it's rather depressing, to be honest.

We've definitely learned that Deadspin rules. Nothing was a bigger influence in our traffic or our publicity they were. Thanks, Will.

Finally, we've learned that you people are cheap -- we only made $12 off the Stop Shuler Store. Thanks for nothing.

So what now? Do we protest Heath when he comes to DC? (We have had some feelers out to the good folks at Kissing Suzy Kolber about that) Do we do what we can to keep him away from the Redskins?

No, our work is done here. It was a good run, but we've got other things to worry about.

Good night, and good luck.

When we chose to start this cause, we didn't realize we'd end up following the twists and turns of one of the more idiotic races in recent memory. Remember the whole debate thing, where Shuler couldn't do it because he doesn't work on Sundays? Well, they finally set up a debate -- a radio debate. How did it go? Before we tell you, just remember that both candidates are using the same playbook:

Pretend you want a debate

Find some way of not having a debate

Blame the other guy not having a debate

After the jump, you can read each side's version of #3. Please note -- those with a weak stomach for political double talk may not want to bother.

Bah -- we hope they both lose.

----------------------------------------
First the Shuler side. You can read more of his side on Scrutiny Hooligans.

Taylor Ducks Debate at Last Minute
Thinks Rules Don’t Apply to Him

Asheville, NC – Today, Heath Shuler was in the WWNC radio studio for his scheduled debate with Charles Taylor. Charles Taylor, however, failed to follow the rules and show up.

“I am extremely disappointed that Charles Taylor failed to show up for the scheduled debate today. I have attended eight debates throughout this district over the past few months that Mr. Taylor has failed to attend. Today, I was at WWNC for my ninth debate, and once again Charles Taylor failed to show up -- just as he has failed to show up for the working families of this district for the past sixteen years.” said Shuler.

“Matt Mittan and the staff of AM 570 WWNC did a fine job of putting together this debate for the people of Western North Carolina. It is terribly unfortunate that Charles Taylor has once again decided that he doesn’t need to follow the rules. That’s the problem with Charles Taylor, he thinks the rules don’t apply to him.”

The rules of the debate were agreed to several days ago. The rules stated that both candidates would be in the WWNC studio with one staff member. Candidates would then answer questions from the listeners that had been emailed to Matt Mittan, the host and moderator. Both campaigns had agreed that the debate would take place between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. Charles Taylor did not inform Mr. Mittan and WWNC until 12:30 p.m. today that he would not be in the studio for the debate as he had agreed.

“It would have been unacceptable for Charles Taylor to sit hidden somewhere with his staff feeding him answers and talking points. That is not a debate,” Shuler continued. “There have been many lies told about me during this campaign, and I wanted to see if Charles Taylor would look me in the eye and repeat those same lies.”

Now, the Taylor side. You can read more of this perspective from Thunder Pig.

A Missed Opportunity for WNC

Today was the day when the voters of WNC were to have -- at long last -- the opportunity to evaluate, side-by-side, two competing visions for our region's future: mine, and that of my opponent in this Congressional race.

Unfortunately, it didn't happen. Five minutes into our discussion this afternoon, Heath Shuler chose to end the debate and walked out of the studio.

Mr. Shuler objected to the fact that I was not appearing in person in WWNC's Asheville studio, but had rather called in by phone from the studio of WHKP in Hendersonville to participate. As I had previously informed Matt Mittan and his staff, I had a commitment to meet with some homeschool students in Hendersonville, and was concerned that I would not be able to make it to the Asheville radio station in time for the 3:00 pm start. But this debate was important to me, and to the people of this region. I made sure I was available on air to talk to Matt, my opponent, and the voters of WNC.

In a purely political move, Mr. Shuler delivered his opening statement and then promptly took off his headphones and exited the Asheville studio. WWNC then disconnected my phone call -- this was fair, since the debate was clearly at an end. I was fortunate, however, that the staff of WHKP allowed me to remain on the air, and I proceeded to take calls and respond to their listeners for the next forty-five minutes.

I deeply regret that the voters of this district will not have the opportunity to evaluate my platform, and my opponent's, in a direct and forthright manner. This is the second time that Mr. Shuler has put an end to efforts to organize a debate.

I want to make one thing perfectly clear: the blame for today's events do not lie with Matt Mittan, or the staff of WWNC -- they are to be commended for their work in putting together a forum for an important political discussion. The decision to walk away from today's debate rests squarely on the shoulders of Heath Shuler.

My pledge to you is that I will continue sharing my vision for the future of our region, directly and candidly -- whether walking WNC's neighborhoods to meet with you in person, appearing on radio and television call-in programs, or hosting tele-town hall meetings in which you are invited to participate. You deserve no less from your elected representative.

May God continue to bless you and your family.

-- Charles

Shuler is up in the polls, he didn't crumble under the pressure and drop out of the race during our interview, and Norv Turner won't even talk to us.

We think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part, and well, we're just the guys to do it. Therefore, we are issuing the following communique from Stop Shuler HQ:

--------------------------------------------------

StopShuler.com Demands Media Stop Referring to Congressional Candidate Heath Shuler as "Former NFL Quarterback"
"Failed NFL Quarterback" or "Former College Quarterback" More Accurate

November 1, 2006 – StopShuler.com, a website dedicated to keeping Heath Shuler out of Washington and therefore away from the Redskins, demanded today that the news media stop referring to North Carolina Congressional candidate Heath Shuler as a "Former NFL Quarterback" or, even worse, a "former Redskins Quarterback," calling these descriptions "inaccurate," "biased," and "deeply offensive."

"By any objective measurement, Heath Shuler was a terrible NFL quarterback," says the site. "The media should not refer to Shuler as a 'former NFL quarterback' any more than they refer to Michael Jordan as a 'former professional baseball player.' Why describe him as something he completely failed at?"

The site suggests several alternatives, all of which are more accurate:

Failed NFL QB

Former college QB

Real Estate Magnate

Tool of San Francisco liberals (suggested by opponent's campaign)

Failed former college and NFL quarterback who also failed in the west coast offense (suggested by Heath Shuler himself in his interview with StopShuler.com)

If the StopShuler.com's demands are not met, the site says, they will whine incessantly to anyone with in earshot. Even more than usual.

For more information, please visit www.stopshuler.com.

About StopShuler.com
Stop Shuler has been the premier destination on the web to discuss Heath Shuler's football career since January of 2006. Featured in the Washington City Paper, by the Associated Press, in Sports Illustrated, and Deadspin, the site offers a fresh perspective on the Congressional race in North Carolina's 11th district. Does anybody actually read this part of a press release?

After our landmark interview with Heath Shuler the other day, we figured it would be only fair if we asked Shuler's former coach, Norv Turner, to comment on what Heath had to say. Sure, he may be busy preparing the mighty 49ers offense for another ass-kicking, but we figured that he'd want to refute some things. Well, here's what happened:

--------------------

Subject: Request for comment from Norv Turner

As you may be aware, one of Coach Turner's proteges, Heath Shuler, is
running for Congress in North Carolina. We interviewed him this
weekend, and asked him why he failed in the NFL. While he did not
completely throw Turner under the bus, he at least got him hit by a
mirror. Some quotes:

"Coach Turner was a rookie like a lot of us."
"I'm sure the coach looks back and feels there were things he would change."
"He asked me 'Are you ready?' -- What was I supposed to say?"

So, we would love to get Norv Turner's official opinion on why Shuler
was a bust in the NFL. Considering that Gus Frerrote got in the Pro
Bowl under Turner's tutelage in 1996 (while Shuler was still on the
team) we think that maybe it wasn't all about the lack of surrounding
talent and poor coaching.

Obviously, we understand that he is rather busy. All we would need is 10
minutes to ask him why Shuler wasn't successful and see if he would
like to comment on Shuler's statements.

Thank you for your time, and would appreciate any help you can provide.

Sincerely,

Stop Shuler

We only had to wait a few hours for the response:

--------------------

We will decline this request.

--------------------

Well, there you have it -- Norv Turner is obviously afraid to talk to us. Or, he's pissed about us calling him Norv (bleep)ing Turner in our TV ad. Either way, we have neither the time nor the inclination to explain ourselves to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom we provide, then questions the manner in which we provide it. But that's just us.

So, a few weeks ago, we sent a playful email to Shuler’s press guy, asking for an interview. We didn’t think anything would come of it, to be honest. In fact, we were thinking of turning it into a part of the site like, "Why won’t Heath Shuler face the truth?" or "Day 12 of Shuler ignoring us" or something.

So, we were a bit surprised when he called us on Saturday.

The full interview is after the break, but here is the summary:

Like any good politician, he has his talking points down about why he failed in the NFL (here’s another interview where he said pretty much the same stuff). They are:

The team wasn’t very good

Washington wasn’t the right system

Norv put him in before he was ready

He was just getting on track in New Orleans when injuries finally derailed his career.

Talking to him, we believe he is sincere in believing that he was just a victim of bad luck. It’s not surprising -- there aren’t a whole lot of athletes that are going to come out and say, "you know what, I just wasn’t very talented." He’s a bit delusional, but not in a bitter or paranoid way -- he only threw Norv under one wheel of the bus.

He tried to twist around the idea that he would curse the Redskins if he came back to DC (or that he already is cursing them) by suggesting that if he got elected, perhaps he would reverse whatever curse he planted on the team the first time around. It was a nice effort.

He claims that he finds this site funny, entertaining, and a good thing. We don’t know if we completely believe that either -- if he had called us "ungrateful little pricks holding a grudge" or something, he wouldn’t have looked very Congressional. Nonetheless, he laughed at our jokes, and only really tightened up when we accused him of being stupid.

Oh, and he and his wife struggle to come up with baby names, which is how they ended up with "Navy" and "Island."

-------------------------------------------------------

Stop Shuler: Why did you fail in the NFL?

Heath Shuler: I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Everyone on the team, myself included, gave 110%. You’ve got to give the team that -- we tried hard. It just didn’t work out there. It’s not uncommon, just look at Steve Young in Tampa Bay, Brett Favre in Atlanta -- they had to go to other places, where they had a lot of talent around them before they succeeded.

SS: You just compared yourself to two Hall of Fame quarterbacks -- is that fair?

HS: Well, I’m just saying that they are examples of how sometimes things don’t work out the first place you go. Look at my good friends Trent Green and Brad Johnson -- they played in DC and went on to success elsewhere -- Brad even won a Super Bowl.

SS: They also played well in Washington, though.

HS: True enough.

SS: Do you think Norv Turner mishandled the QB situation when you were there?

HS: Coach Turner was rookie like the rest of us. I’m sure he looks back on things and thinks he made some mistakes, just like we all do. I don’t know if it would have ever worked for me in Washington.

SS: One of the criticisms that people have made is that perhaps Turner’s offense was too complicated for you. Some have even suggested that you forgot the plays on the way to the huddle.

HS: I think you need to hear a coach or another player say that before you can say that it is true. Just because you hear in on some blog or on your site, doesn’t mean it is true.

SS: So, it wasn’t a matter of the playbook being too complicated for you?

HS: No -- that couldn’t be farther from the truth. You shouldn’t believe that stuff unless you hear it from a coach.

SS: The reason you cited for not doing a debate with your opponent was that you give 110% on any day but Sunday. You had to know that people would connect it to your playing days. Did your "no work on Sunday" policy affect your play?

HS: [Laughs] That must have been it -- you’ve figured it out. I was used to playing on Friday nights and Saturdays -- that’s why the NFL wasn’t a success.

SS: You did win the only Redskins game you played on a Saturday.

HS: Maybe you’ve discovered the secret. I’ll take my faith over football any day.

SS: You talk about "Mountain Values" a lot. What exactly are mountain values? How are they different than coastal values? I saw the movie Deliverance recently -- they had mountain values, but I assume yours are different.

HS: Mountain values are about community, faith, and respect for others. They are about saying "yes sir" and "no ma’am" and taking your hat off when you go indoors. They are about pulling over for a funeral procession. They are about being there for people when they need help.

SS: They don’t sound unique to mountains. They actually sound like military values.

HS: You may not understand what they mean, being on the coast, but the people around here know what we’re talking about.

SS: If you are elected, what is the next step? No one wants to be just a Congressman. You have to campaign constantly, and freshman Congressmen are not even like freshmen on a football team -- they’re like freshmen male cheerleaders, pecking order-wise.

HS: I think actually I will be able to get a lot done -- we have received a lot of national attention. That is the reason your site has been in the news as well. I think I will be able to have influence.

SS: I was thinking more about your personal ambition -- do you want to be a Senator? Or Governor? Or worse?

HS: Well, I think we’re going to take things one step at a time. We’re going to make sure that Western North Carolina is represented well, and our country is headed is the right direction. I’m not going to worry about anything else.

SS: Obviously your training with dealing with sports media has done you well -- you can say the same things: "We’re just going to take it one game at a time, and good Lord willing, it will all work out."

HS: [Laughs] I guess you’re right.

SS: Okay, November 26, 1995. RFK stadium -- a 14-7 loss to the Eagles. Did you hear me boo?

HS: What? Did I hear you boo? I mean, I obviously couldn’t pick one person out --
You know, was that you guys that got a beach ball taken away? I heard some boos when that happened, I’m sure it wasn’t because of an interception or anything…

SS: Now some random questions. Do you really not drink carbonated beverages?

HS: No, I don’t. It was a challenge my dad laid on me when I was a kid, and I stick with it. I’ll have some tea when I’m out and about, though.

SS: So is it the bubbles? Or the caffeine?

HS: The caffeine. I’m disciplined about these things, but if I’m at an event where there’s just tea, I’ll drink it.

SS: The names of your kids are Navy and Island -- what’s up with that?

HS: My son is Navy. It was the only name my wife and I agreed on -- she made a list of ten names, and I made a list of ten names. And that was the only one that matched. It was from a road atlas -- there was a Navy street on a map. My daughter is Island -- it came from Island transportation company. My wife and I were driving around talking about names, and the truck went by. We both liked it. They’re good nautical names. We don’t have any oceans up here in the mountains, so I guess we thought we would use the nautical theme.

SS: Just so you know, you have inspired my wife and I to name our next child "Marine Corps."

HS: [Laughs] That’s funny.

SS: Do you really talk to Steve Spurrier?

HS: Yes, I do. I talked to him when he took the SC job, and then after spring practice. I haven’t talked to him recently, because I’ve been so busy. But the Volunteers play South Carolina tonight, and that’s always a good game.

SS: I refer to the Steve Spurrier era as Redskins head coach as "Two years of my life I’m not getting back." I’m sure Redskins fans don’t like the idea of you two getting together.

HS: [Laughs] I suppose that is true.

SS: So what do you really think of this website?

HS: Well, we live in a free country, and I figure that as long as people are talking about me, it’s a good thing. I like watching the site to see what’s next -- it is like being a character in a book. It’s always interesting. It keeps us motivated here at the office, and it keeps us laughing. I think it is good that someone can make light of politics. It’s like seeing politicians on the Daily Show -- it’s good to laugh at politicians. I figure that if you can laugh at yourself, it makes you a better person.

SS: Do you think it will have an impact on the election?

HS: Well, we’re spending millions of dollars to reach tens of thousands of voters, and it is hard for one person or one site to have much of an impact. But I think it’s great. I really do. Now, would my parents or my wife like it -- probably not. They take these things too personally.

I mean, there was no one who wanted me to play better in Washington that I did. After the third game in my rookie year, when we weren’t doing well with John Friez, the coach comes up to me and says, "Kid, are you ready?" What was I going to say? "No, let me sit another year?" I mean as a competitor, you want to get out there and play, whether you’re ready or not.

SS: So you don’t think you were ready to play?

HS: Listen, not too many freshman quarterbacks make an immediate impact like Peyton Manning or Troy Aikman. You are seeing some this year, like Matt Leinart, who showed some poise bringing his team down the field against the Bears, but the kicker missed the field goal.

SS: How you like to get compared to quarterbacks like Ryan Leaf?

HS: I don’t think I do get compared to him.

SS: Well, we did. And it comes up every so often talking about draft busts.

HS: I think the biggest difference between Ryan Leaf and I were our personalities. You didn’t see me snapping at anyone in the media.

I think if you look at my career, I just didn’t get the downs. I split time my first two years, and my third year, I didn’t play. I went to the Saints had won my last two starts when I dislocated every toe on my left foot in a game against the Raiders.

SS: Ouch.

HS: Then I went to the Raiders a couple years later, and I thought Jon Gruden’s system was the right place for me. I thought my mobility and my athleticism would fit in well. In the west coast offense, it’s 1-2-3-4-5 throw, and it doesn’t allow for it. But if your toes don’t work, you can’t run, and there you have it.

SS: If you do get elected, will you stay away from the team?

HS: What do you mean?

SS: Well, it’s kind of our theory that you’re a curse.

HS: [Laughs] Well, there aren’t too many people I know left on the team. I remain close to [Redskins Head Trainer] Bubba Tyer of course, I really respect him about as much as any one in the world. Bobby Mitchell as well -- BJ at the front desk, is about as a quality human being as you will ever meet. As far as a curse, you know the team was 3-13 before I got there, so maybe, you know, it wasn’t me.

Although, maybe if I go back, I’ll turn it around, and lift the curse.

SS: You mean this could reverse the curse?

HS: Yeah, I like that -- send me back to Washington and I’ll reverse the curse. [Laughs]

SS: Okay, one last question. One of the things we want to do before the election is to ask the mainstream media to stop referring to you as a "former NFL quarterback." The theory being that they shouldn’t, since you weren’t successful at it. I mean, they don’t call Michael Jordan a "former professional baseball player." So, what you would rather be described as?

A Failed NFL QB

A Former college QB

A Real Estate Magnate

A Tool of San Francisco liberals (suggested by the Taylor campaign)

HS: [Laughs] I like that last one. Hold on, read them again, maybe we can combine them.

SS: A Failed NFL QB, A Former College QB, A Real Estate Magnate, or A Tool of San Francisco liberals.

HS: How about a "Failed former college and NFL quarterback who also failed in the west coast offense." That way we get the California thing in there, too. [Laughs]

SS: Okay, I’ll put that down. Thanks for your time, and being a good sport about this.

HS: No problem, and keep doing what you’re doing -- I really do enjoy it.

One of the main points of the Stop Shuler Manifesto is that the Redskins are finally getting things right, and having Heath Shuler back in town could screw all that up. Yes, we know, it's not really deep stuff, like proposing to give the workers the control of the means of production or anything. Nonetheless, today, after watching the Redskins fall to 2-5 and not have any aspect of the team look good, we're starting to wonder if there is a slight flaw in our theory. Maybe the Redskins aren't any better off now than when Shuler was on the team. Except for two seasons (1999 & 2005), the team has pretty much looked bad for the last 14 years. Perhaps Shuler was just one of many things that went wrong, like Norv Turner, Steve Spurrier, Deion Sanders, Jeff George, Michael Westbrook, Tony Banks, and so on and so on.

A reporter once asked us if, we were Charlie Casserly back in 1994, what would we do? You could say "take Trent Dilfer" -- he at least was competent to win Super Bowl, even if he didn't contribute much. You could say "trade the pick" -- but who knows what you would get. We said, "draft Peyton Manning." Now, we're pretty sure you can't pick a guy and wait four years for him to graduate (we know that the Celtics did a similar thing with Larry Bird, drafting him his junior year and waiting a year until he was able to play), but it would have been the right move, with the benefit of hindsight. Watching Manning take apart the Redskins (and appear in about 96 commercials) today, it does make us wonder.

Or, we suppose, we could decide to believe that EVERYTHING that has gone wrong with the Redskins since 1994 is Heath Shuler's fault, and maybe even start talking about "The Shuler Curse."

We'll have to sleep on it.

Finally, we have an explanation for why Shuler was such a failure in the NFL. Bad coaching? Foot injuries? Too dumb? Nope -- he just doesn't work on Sundays.

For those of you with better things to do than to follow this campaign (which, quite frankly, we hope is all of you), you have missed a lot of back and forth posturing about a potential debate between Shuler and his opponent, incumbent Charles Taylor (R - Mountain Values). It seems pretty obvious that neither side wants a debate, probably because neither of them would fare very well. They have, however, spent a lot of energy blaming the other guy for the lack of a debate.

Now, Heath Shuler has come up with a GREAT reason for why he backed out of (or never agreed to, depending who you ask) a proposed debate on October 29 -- it's a Sunday, and that is a day he spends with his family. In this clip (fast forward to about a minute in when he starts to speak), he actually says -- and we swear we are not making this up:

"When it comes to the week, every day but Sunday, I'm going to give you 110%. I'll give you all I have. And I'm going to rest on Sunday."

We sure wish the Redskins knew that he was going to take Sundays off when they drafted him. Although, like we said, his miserable performances on Sundays all make sense now.

Finally, someone in the media is doing their job. From the esteemed pages of Sports Illustrated:

Heath Shuler fizzled as a top Redskins draft pick. Now he wants to return to D.C. as a congressman

In the 19 games Heath Shuler spent taking snaps for the Washington Redskins in the mid-1990s, the team went 4-15. His quarterback rating during that time was a subterranean 58.3. Routinely, the fans at RFK Stadium booed Shuler, the third pick in the 1994 NFL draft, more lustily than they did any opposing player. With a track record like that, you'd think the guy would never want to work in D.C. again. Yet Shuler has designs on returning to town when the 110th U.S. Congress convenes in January.

Hmmm... now where did the get those stats?

Anyway, our favorite part, outside of the goofy picture of Shuler, was the photo credits on the side of the page:
