Shuler not stopped
Well, as you may have heard, Heath Shuler was elected to Congress today.
Back in January, when we found out Heath Shuler was running for Congress, we thought, "wouldn’t it be funny to oppose his bid, purely on football reasons?" We think the conclusion, after all of this, is yes. Yes it was.
We did this for the cause of comedy. No higher ideals,no politics, nothing very noble. Technically, we are not residents of DC (we prefer sunny San Diego these days). Technically, we are Democrats. Even more technically, we are more liberal than Heath Shuler. And while we are dealing in technicalities, our family wants us back.
We learned lots of things along the way.
We realized that we’re glad that we don’t live in North Carolina’s 11th Congressional district. Not just because we lack "mountain values," but because of who they had to choose from in this election. As much as we made fun of Heath Shuler for his football career, as a politician he really seemed like an empty suit. That being said, his opponent, Charles Taylor, was a rich old crook who had problems being even remotely appealing. It is amazing what happens when you start to look at the details of a specific Congressional election — it’s rather depressing, to be honest.
We’ve definitely learned that Deadspin rules. Nothing was a bigger influence in our traffic or our publicity they were. Thanks, Will.
Finally, we’ve learned that you people are cheap — we only made $12 off the Stop Shuler Store. Thanks for nothing.
So what now? Do we protest Heath when he comes to DC? (We have had some feelers out to the good folks at Kissing Suzy Kolber about that) Do we do what we can to keep him away from the Redskins?
No, our work is done here. It was a good run, but we’ve got other things to worry about.
Good night, and good luck.

As heard on MSNBC last night (and on Reason Online this morning):
Chris Matthews: “…in North Carolina, challenger Heath Shuler completes his upset of incumbent Charles Taylor.”
Keith Olberman: “At least he completed something.”
Not for nothing, but your merchandise sucked. I really wanted to buy a Stop Shuler shirt, but I was afraid I would look like a neo-con running around. I am afraid your logo just did not convey the message your manifesto emphasized.
However, this site was one of the best things that came out of the election. I hope you guys try to do it again in 2008. Thanks for the hilarity!
A Stop Shuler mug would have been a great buy. Oh well, thanks for the laughs guys.
This site was funny and I enjoyed reading it, but you really ought to come visit our area before being so critical. I am originally from Boston and I also lived in “sunny San Diego” for 7 years until the mid 1990s. Your view of the NC 11th district seems entirely one dimensional. I have lived here for the past 8 years, and this is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL PLACE!! The mountain vistas are wonderful, it’s one of the safest parts of the country, home and land prices are reasonable, and the people here are very friendly.
Hey, all we said that the weather is worse than San Diego and the Congressional candidates suck — both empirically true statements. We’re sure it is very nice.
Yeah, we really didn’t have much reason to continue our site either. Thanks for being our unlikely and accidental counterpoint!
Yours in snark,

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha
You are a pathetic excuse for a human being. Heath rules! Back to work at Burger King for you, loser. Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha
For the record, we have not worked at Burger King since 1990. But we could probably still remember how to make a Whopper in a pinch.
You should be so lucky to live in the 11th district, assholes. Asheville is an amazing place to live. Shuler was the lesser of two evils.
Bush was elected in the US. Does that mean he represents US values? Does that mean we should all move to Canada?
It’s happening already. The Eagles game. *Sob*
Are you same Jason Woodmansee who went to The George Washington University in the early 1990s?
If so, I am that guy you met who voted for you for Student Council President.
IIRC, you got 13 votes, and I was the only person who voted for you didn’t actually know.
It’s good to see that your political skills have advanced to the point that you can’t even intercept Health Shuler.
Heath shuler..was a runner-up for the Heisman,All SEC..I’m from Tennessee and I think Heath Shuler is great for Washington..and for The Redskins fans ..go drown yourself!!!!! GO VOLS!
Yes, runner up to Charlie Ward, a basketball player. And then, in the NFL, runner-up to Gus Frerotte, the 197th pick the draft.
You only received $12 because the people who live in NC’s 11th district felt that Charles Taylor became out of touch with what the people want. Even though Heath Shuler is new to politics and with Charles Taylor coughing up over 2 million dollars in a desperate attempt to hold his seat, he lost by over 17,000 votes. Heath Shuler is a great representative for all the people of western North Carolina.
Man, opposing someone for purely comical reasons is the greatest thing ever. There should be more socio-political movements based purely upon nonsensical things that happened in the past… wait. That’s like every religious conflict ever.
